Managing Thailand's Ageing Population ; ISEAS Perspective ; Issue 2019 No. 32
According to official figures, Thailand has been an ageing society since 2005. Estimates indicate that the percentage of people aged 65 and over in Thailand has increased from 5.0 per cent in 1950 to 8.4 per cent in 2000 and will continue to increase to 27.1 percent by 2050. These estimates mean that Thailand will become "a super-aged society" in the next 30 years. The percentage of the Thai population aged 65 and over will increase at a faster rate than both the Asian and world averages. Rapid ageing in Thailand, occurring in just 22 years (as compared to over 60 years in some developed countries), is primarily due to improvements in the healthcare system and successful government birth control campaigns. Thailand's total fertility rate (TFR) has declined from 6.4 in the mid-1960s to 1.9 in the mid-1990s.
